Mutiny

Is there anything more reliable these days than how enjoyable the latest Jason Statham action flick will be?
MUTINY is another cracking thriller, packed with fast paced action, a rip-roaring revenge story and just the right amount of drama behind the thrills.
Statham is on a roll the past few years, delivering exactly what we expect and count on every. single. time.
Since 2024, he's served up "The Beekeeper", "A Working Man", "Shelter" and now this Die-Hard-on-the-high-seas that over-delivered for me.
Statham stars as former Royal Marine Commando Cole Reed, who's now the personal bodyguard to Tibu Campallo (Ramon Tikaram) a billionaire Thai industrialist and shipping magnate who's just about to sell the company alongside his son Kameron (Chaneil Kunar). Early scenes between Tibu and Cole reveal the depth of their respect and their trust laden relationship.
But everything in Bangkok isn't what it seems to be and Tibu & Cole are trapped in a deadly ambush that involves the actual city police.
Escaping from the deadly scene, Cole follows the trail of his ambushers to a massive departing cargo ship, where he sneaks aboard to find Tibu's killers.
The ship is packed with cargo containers with secrets of their own and an international conspiracy waiting to explode.
Cole discovers those secrets right alongside newly assigned third mate Angie Ellis (Annabelle Wallis from "Unabomber") and the two are soon pursued Bruce WIllis in "Die Hard" style by Captain Marko Madsen and his ex-military crew of bad dudes.

Roland Moller (Skyscraper, Atomic Blonde) is well cast as the Captain, who'll stop at nothing to get rid of Cole and Angie.
Under the direction of Jean-Francois Richet, who also helmed Gerard Butler's action thriller "Plane", the film moves like a clock, ticking off one taut action sequence after another with heavy doses of machine gun fire, explosions and hand-to-hand combat. What else could an action fan want!?!
The fight choreography is up close and brutal and more than once, blood from the battles splashes across the camera lens. It's a blast.
Sure it's formulaic. Who cares?

It's also great to see the US Navy come into play when Angie manages to get a distress signal sent from the ship. Every scene with the Navy vessel and its crew is perfectly executed. Adrian Lester (The Day After Tomorrow) has real presence as Captain Adam Spencer and when the US cavalry comes rolling in, its a thrilling sequence, no matter how little they'll have to do by the time Cole's done with the bad guys.
Statham serves as a producer along with leading the thrills on the big screen in great style. As long as he keeps turning out action thrillers like his last four, I'll be there.
MUTINY gets a solid, enjoyable & exciting B. Keep 'em coming, Jason!
(Fans of "Die Hard", watch closely for some direct visual tributes to that action classic when Statham's Cole is trapped inside the ship's vents!)
