DRIVE is like some strange, lost Walter Hill/Michael Mann film from the 80's. With its cursive, pink throwback titles and bizarre 80's score and opening action sequence, it starts off in one direction. Then, as Ryan Gosling opens up on camera, you discover more and more about who he is. Some of those discoveries are very dark and the movie follows him down the rabbit hole. With stunning car chases, graphic violence in sudden outbursts, a shockingly good dramatic turn by Albert Brooks and a story that twists and turns in unexpected directions, Drive is a real thriller. NOT for the squeamish and anything but flawless, but really interesting and unexpected. Drives its way in a CRAZY mix of styles to an A- for me.
