Stanley Kubrick's 1956 film THE KILLING is a classic hard boiled crime drama. Sterling Hayden is just out of prison and planning a bold $2 million heist at the Race Track, surrounded by old friends from low places. Considered bold in its time for its depiction of violence and sexuality, its pretty tame by today's standards. Half of the dialogue is really great and half seems very dated, but the worst touch is the narration, which seems imported from one of those old science movies we used to watch at school in the 60s! Every time the narrator started speaking, it really pulled me out of the movie. Classic ending, some good bits, but average Kubrick. C
